The wind is HOWLING
23 09 2008It’s 5am, the door bell just rang to tell me they had put my early morning tea in a little hatch. I got up, got my silver tea tray and returned to my bed and my computer.
The reason I am up this early ( and the poor tea lady too) is so that I can wonder out to the entrance of the hotel and catch a great sunrise. I wonder how crazy this is but I know that in 1 hour I will post an image that you will gasp at.
Well I hope so. In fact I know so !
So until then hold your breath… I’ll be back.

apologies
22 09 2008for the name across the middle of the photos and I hope you can still see them. A few of my colleagues have been so ripped off in the past of images by people downloading their images. So to enable me to share these with you I have to protect them somehow.
Sorry ( the world has baddies in it !)

3 days down
19 09 2008and I know I am going to LOVE this assignment.
I spent the past 3 days in the informal sectors of our community aka townships. It was in a place called Soweto and no matter how many times I go there for shoots I always come back wih a heart full of images and stories of REAL people and I love it.
These people live very hard lives often with no running water or 6 people sharing a bed and yet they are happy and open hearted and wonderful.
I needed a crowd shot so we went to Dube staion at 6am and as the trains came in you heard the African gospel singing coming from the train. I always get goose-pimples with this beautiful sound. No picture tells this story.
UBUNTU – the meaning of Africa. The fact that people are people because of people is so evident in the next 2 images. this was an old lady (gogo) and a passer-by simply stopped to help lift her goods onto her head and then walked off !
This granny ( gogo) was so happy I came into her home to hear her stories. Betty Makele – I love your stories – and your sense of humour is amazing. At 90 to still be so vain and so full of vibrancy I admire you. Salekahle Ugogo (stay well )
Ok so have you had enough yet? Hope not….. this is a lonnnngggg journey. Hope you share it with me.

GOLD MEDAL FOR ME
16 09 2008yay ! I don’t think it’s my first but gold is still good. Don’t ya think ?
what is that I hear you saying ? ” what’s it for ? ” “is it for a photo ?” “is it for a lo” ? well I am going to put you out of your misery at some stage in this post but not before I ask a few questions.
What does gold mean ? Best in class, best on the day, best ever, first, fastest, record breaker. Simply better than the others? Funny how gold makes you feel all of the above ! Especially if the newspaper is there to capture it. Then you wonder if it is going to be front page, hey.
But alas my gold medal isn’t like the others. Well firstly it isn’t REAL gold. It’s more like a plastic gold. Secondly the newspaper didn’t pitch. Thirdly 3 of us got gold ( get that one ? ! ) But alas there were many that didn’t get a plastic gold medal. There were many who didn’t even get a plastic silver or bronze medal. So I should be ECSTATIC.
I got gold
it’s for being there more often then anyone else. For pitching more. For arriving each day…ready to pound the fat !
Anyway I am happy I got GOLD
